    Many people know by now that acupuncture works wonders for managing pain and promoting physical healing. Did you know that it also benefits the mind, emotions, and spirit? Acupuncture treatments in general are incredibly relaxing and calming to the body, mind and emotions. But sometimes more help is needed to specifically address emotional upset. People go through many changes in their lives, including jobs, relationships, personal goals, and so on. Often, in the midst of such changes, you need extra support. Acupuncture can be a wonderful way to receive the emotional support we need throughout our lives.

When we’re called to heal on the emotional and spiritual levels, we can become so enmeshed in emotional pain and negative thought patterns that we need someone we can trust to light the path and help guide us to higher ground. People need people, and acupuncturists can be an excellent ally every step of the way.

    Acupuncture is an excellent tool to use to help us move through changes. It can calm, center, and ground people who feel scattered. It can also help cycle the energy when someone feels very emotionally or mentally stuck. I’ll often work on points related to the digestive system when someone has been through a lot and needs to process the experience. People actually process emotions and information through the same systems through which they process and digest food. This is especially evident when stress and worry starts to cause digestive system symptoms like bloating, indigestion, IBS, and food cravings.

    Looking at physical symptoms helps to guide the acupuncturist to support the part of the body-mind-spirit most affected by stress. Acupuncturists can also choose points based on which emotion or emotions are present. For example, there are points on the Kidney meridian which help people through periods of fear or loss of will power to help them to keep moving forward. Or, points on the Liver meridian can help sooth irritability or quell anger. Yes, we can visit our acupuncturist with the sole goal of working on our chronic frustration and anger. Or for unrelenting grief. Any emotion, really anything that is a sign of imbalance in our body or our life is an appropriate reason to see an acupuncturist.
