Digestive Health

It is estimated that 60-70 million Americans experience digestive problems (1). Possible causes are diet, lack of exercise, and chronic stress.  Digestive problems can range from minor annoyances, such as gas and bloating, to serious illnesses, such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

We are passionate about this topic because the digestive system is the foundation of health for the entire body.  It plays a crucial role in our immune systems, endocrine system, energy levels, skin health, and our mood.

Our holistic approach to digestive health includes:

  • acupuncture
  • eastern nutrition
  • herbal medicine
  • nutritional supplements
  • relaxation techniques

While occasional digestive upset after a large holiday meal is normal, persistent symptoms are a clear message from your body that you are going down the path of chronic disease.  Chinese medicine excels at treating functional disorders like those of the digestive tract.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

IBS is a relatively common disorder.  Standard medical treatment includes antidiarrheal and antispasmodic drugs, antidepressants, and antibiotics.  Stress management and diet changes are also recommended.  Acupuncture and Chinese herbs can help this condition immensely, by regulating the digestive system and reducing stress levels.

Irritable Bowl Disease (IBD)

Irritable bowel disease is a medical condition that includes Crohn’s and Ulcerative Colitis.  The risks of this disease includes malnutrition from not absorbing food.  Acupuncture can help regulate the digestive system, and is useful in both acute and chronic states of the disease.

Heartburn, Reflux, and GERD

Heartburn is typically caused by over eating, emotional factors, eating too fast or while stressed, and/or imbalanced stomach pH.  Self-prescribing antacids and acid blockers can be harmful, and is not a long-term solution.  We will explore the root cause of this issue for you, while using acupuncture and herbs to bring symptomatic and long term relief.

Weight

Points around the ear are commonly used to help weight loss, and there are trust worthy protocols to follow.  These points can calm food cravings and encourage detoxification.  Acupuncture points on the body are chosen according to the health pattern of the individual patient.  Chinese herbs and/or nutritional supplements are also recommended to balance blood sugar, detoxify, and facilitate weight loss.  It’s an excellent adjunct to a low sugar diet and regular exercise.
