Low back pain is one of the most common reasons that people seek complimentary treatments like acupuncture, massage, and chiropractic. It’s often due to a desk job, an old sports injury, or even herniated disks. No matter the cause, acupuncture is an excellent therapy to relieve back pain, and relax and strengthen the back to prevent future injuries.
Results vary by person, but typically we like to see new patients twice a week for a couple weeks, and then weekly for a few weeks after that. We have seen some people with chronic low back pain find relief for weeks after their first visit. Others have slow, steady progress that starts with a few days of relief, and then proceed to have longer stretches of pain free days after visits.
Many people will be able to go through a course of treatments (6-10), and will only need maintenance self-care treatments after that. This can be acupuncture and massage or other body work, but most important is a regular, balanced exercise schedule, relaxation practices, and a reasonable diet.
For people with structural disorders such as spondylolisthesis and scoliosis, acupuncture can reduce muscular discomfort, but it cannot fix the structure. However, regular treatments, at least monthly, can greatly reduce pain.
We have seen people with herniated disks receive great benefits from acupuncture. We can often reach a point where a monthly treatment, or less, is all that is needed to significantly decrease pain, and allow the patient to get back to doing the activities he or she enjoys.
